Understanding BESS Installation

Most people already have a basic understanding of battery storage, and today, there are countless possibilities for using batteries, whether for individual households or large industries. A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) can be customized to meet specific requirements or standardized for easier implementation. While the benefits of battery storage are well-known, the real question lies in how suitable a location is for BESS installation. Can anyone set up a BESS, or are there specific restrictions to consider? We consulted our battery experts, who shared key insights on what factors are crucial for a successful installation. To save you time (and your eyes) we’ve summarized the most important points below. Let’s go!

BESS-siste survey

Site survey – step one

After receiving a request for a system tailored to the customer’s needs, the next step is to inspect the location where the system will be installed. For utility-scale systems (such as 10ft, 20ft, or 40ft containers), there are many considerations. For example, containers are shipped via trucks that have specific limitations on length, height, and weight. The total weight (truck + container) must be accounted for, especially when planning installations in restricted areas. Sometimes, the batteries could be pre-installed into the container before delivery to the site; in other cases, the limitations of the road will set the rules of the game.

Environmental Considerations and Site Limitations

Weather plays a critical role in designing a BESS installation. For instance, stormy or rainy environments can increase the risk of flooding, which can threaten the site. To mitigate these risks, additional drainage systems and barriers may be necessary. Additionally, by elevating the container about 0.5 meters off the ground, the risk of moisture from the soil seeping into the system is significantly reduced. When surveying the site, it’s crucial to review historical weather data for the area to anticipate any potential environmental challenges, including risks from extreme heat, cold, or other natural events.

The access to the site

Delivering a large container requires ample space for loading and unloading using a mobile crane. If multiple systems are installed next to each other, adequate spacing must be maintained, both for the installation process and future maintenance. Sites located far from urban areas, with many trees or other natural features, may face additional challenges, including limited space, environmental risks, and potential connectivity disruptions.

Safety Regulations and Compliance

Proper placement of a BESS is essential, especially due to the potential fire risks associated with batteries. Following established standards, such as the US standard NFPA855, is critical for ensuring safety. This standard provides guidance on mitigating risks and ensures that all installations are performed appropriately. For instance, if the BESS is being installed close to sensitive buildings such as hospitals or schools, safety measures like a specialized fence (approximately 5-7 feet high) may be required to protect the system. Additionally, if multiple containers are connected, maintaining a minimum distance of at least 3 meters is essential. Read also the article about the cooling system in BESS ->

Civil work for BESS – Preparing the Site Limitations

Civil work includes all construction-related activities needed to prepare the site for installing and operating a BESS. This involves tasks like building foundations, setting up lighting, and preparing the electrical infrastructure. Establishing a solid plan with clear deadlines will help ensure a smoother project. The final step before delivering the system involves completing electrical connections and integrating the system with the grid, which allows the BESS to connect to the site’s main switchgear or transformer.

Sparq – one partner for the whole scope

Some of our customers have extensive experience with electrical installations and can carry out some of the work required for a BESS installation on their own. However, many companies that choose to invest in battery storage prefer a solution where the entire scope is handled by a single supplier. Depending on where you are today, we can offer both options. Feel free to describe your idea, and we’ll connect you with one of our battery experts for free consultation.
