Investment in Battery Storage Opened Doors to New Projects
Kode Solenergi AB is a relatively young company run by two entrepreneurs who truly understand what entrepreneurship means in practice. From selling Christmas trees to entering the solar energy industry, their careers have been filled with both challenges and significant opportunities.
A year ago, Thommy and Joe decided to seize an opportunity and invested in a battery storage system. Today, it stands in their backyard, generating returns through local flex services.
“We chose to invest in a complete 10-foot container with a 375kW-430kWh capacity consisting of 30 battery modules. The idea was to achieve stable returns through the various ancillary services available in the Swedish market. At the time, interest in batteries was incredibly high overall, so we didn’t want to miss the chance. We worked with Sparq’s engineers, who developed this solution,” says Thommy.
Challenges Along the Way
Every project is unique, involving many steps and several stakeholders who contribute to the final outcome. What challenges did you encounter along the way?
“There was quite a lot of administrative work. Before you can order a battery storage system, it first has to be approved for installation and connection. After that, extensive work is required to prepare the entire site for installation, ensuring all the necessary details for such a complex system are in place. As an investor, you should be prepared for a long process, but the right expertise can help streamline it,” Thommy explains.

Expertise Is Key
One of the key factors Thommy emphasizes is the advantage of working closely with people who have expertise in electricity and electrical installations, which helped their BESS project get approved relatively quickly.
“It’s incredibly important to collaborate with people who know their thing! Many discussions with energy companies become much easier when there are experts who can answer the trickiest questions about the capacity, connectivity, and more. There’s a lot to learn from a project like this, and it’s important to be open to any changes that may arise,” Thommy continues.
Location Matters
Predicting returns on a battery storage system for individual investors is difficult, and Kode Solenergi AB was aware of this from the beginning.
“Of course, we wanted the battery investment to be profitable, so we did our own calculations. One key factor to consider is location—it plays a crucial role in this context. Where you place a battery storage system and what services it is intended for determine the final outcome.
The advantage of our company is its strong local presence. Hisingen (a small island in Gothenburg, Sweden), where we are based, currently has a high demand for more electricity supply. New initiatives are being taken to connect more players to the local support market, and we have taken advantage of this by connecting our batteries to generate new revenue. However, we also understand that as more players enter the market, competition will increase, so we must continue thinking ahead,” says Thommy.

New Collaboration with Sparq
A unique aspect of this project is that Kode Solenergi AB has also become a strong partner for us at Sparq. Together, we have installed multiple BESS projects across Sweden and continue to explore new opportunities with incoming requests.
“We have really found each other’s strengths and know how to move forward. The Scandinavian market has changed significantly over the past year, with new players entering and a shift happening in many areas. However, we are already planning multiple projects, even beyond the Nordic region, which makes us at Kode very optimistic about future developments!” concludes Thommy.
