Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) not only store energy for use when it’s needed most – whether during peak demand, outages, or to harness excess power from solar, wind or the grid. 

In combination with an intelligent Energy Management System (EMS), they can also provide a long list of applications that reduce energy costs, creates new revenue streams and enable and protect daily operations.

Front-of-the-Meter (FTM)
Grid-side / utility-scale, mostly revenue and grid-service driven:

  • Energy arbitrage — buy/store energy when wholesale prices are low, discharge/sell when high (day-ahead and intraday trading)
  • Frequency Containment Reserves (FCR) — fast automatic response to keep grid frequency stable (e.g. FCR-N, FCR-D up/down)
  • Frequency Restoration Reserves (FRR) — automatic (aFRR) and manual (mFRR) balancing services
  • Fast frequency response (FFR) / synthetic inertia — sub-second injection to stabilize frequency on low-inertia grids
  • Voltage support / reactive power (Q) regulation — hold voltage within limits locally
  • Capacity market / firm capacity — being available as guaranteed capacity when the system needs it
  • Reserve & ancillary services (stödtjänster) — the broader basket of Transmission System Operator (TSO) / Distribution System Operator (DSO) support products
  • Renewable firming & smoothing — stabilize variable solar/wind output, reduce ramp rates
  • Curtailment reduction / renewable time-shifting — capture would-be-wasted generation and release it later
  • Congestion management & grid-investment deferral — relieve constrained lines and postpone transmission/distribution upgrades
  • Local flexibility markets — sell flexibility to the  DSO where the grid is tight
  • Black start — restart parts of the grid after an outage
  • Peaker replacement — cover system peaks instead of fossil peaking plants

Behind-the-Meter (BTM)
Customer-side, mostly cost savings and resilience:

  • Peak shaving / demand-charge reduction — cut the expensive kW peaks on your bill
  • Load shifting / time-of-use optimization — move consumption to cheaper hours
  • Self-consumption optimization — store your own solar (or off-peak energy) for use after dark
  • Backup power / UPS / reserve power (reservkraft) — ride through outages, protect critical loads
  • Grid-capacity relief — add load, machines or chargers behind an existing connection instead of paying to upgrade it
  • EV charging buffering — deliver fast charging without a grid reinforcement (Sparq SuperCharger / MobileCharger)
  • Power quality — voltage support, flicker and harmonic mitigation, protection from dips/sags
  • Genset / diesel replacement or hybridization — cut fuel, noise and emissions on weak-grid or off-grid sites
